2009 Monthly Activities

If you are interested in volunteering for any of the following activities, please sign-up in the Thread at the bottom of the page.

If you are interested in Big Brother/Big Sister program, but are not a member, you are still able to volunteer at the activities, however please contact Bob Farley to make the arrangements before showing up at an event.

Upcoming Events The Big Brother Big Sister Program will be participating in the Downtown Lock Haven Christmas Parade on Saturday, December 5, 2009. We will march in the parade as a group. Please wear your red Big Brothers Big Sisters T-shirt if you still have them. I will have some extra T-shirts for anyone who needs one. We plan to get elf caps and reindeer ears and also decorate cardboard boxes with gift wrap that Bigs and Littles can put over themselves to march in the parade. We will be assisted by Lock Haven University students in getting ready for this parade. We will meet at the Big Brothers Big Sisters Office at 5:00 p.m. to get dressed in our parade costumes. We will then walk to Henderson and Main Streets to line up for the parade. We would ask that parents meet their children after the parade in the Covenant United Methodist Church parking lot on West Main Street across the street from the post office between the Women’s Center and the flashing red light at the corner of First and West Main Streets. Let us know if you need transportation assistance. Please dress appropriately for the weather including warm footwear, hats, and gloves if it is cold the day of the parade. W will have the third and final essay writing session in the Big Brothers Big Sisters Office on Tuesday, December 8, 2009 from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. The Big Brothers Big Sisters Board has decided that all Littles who complete the three steps of the essay writing contest and then turn in a completed essay will be awarded a $25 gift card from Wal-Mart. We will have our final event of the year on Friday, December 11, 2009 when we swim at Lock Haven University from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. Please call me to register for these events at 893-7036. I will be on vacation numerous days in December, so please leave me a message or call the Big Brothers Big Sisters Program Assistant, Jovana DeSalvo at 893-2585 ext. 202.

Adopt A Family 2009

Brighten the Holiday Season

Adopt a family was developed and designed as a way to reach out and help families in the surrounding communities during the holiday season. Many times these families are hard-pressed and can not afford to give their children gifts for the holiday season. They have no support from other organizations and often one or both parents are: single, unemployed, victims of tragedy or even homeless.
Departments and Professors here at the University are then matched to a family. They buy gifts according to the needs identified by the family. The gifts are all brought to one room on campus so that the staff and students can see just how much they have done for their community.

This is a great way to help make a difference in the lives of people living in the community and help to make their holiday season just a bit brighter. In October, volunteers are needed to contact families to obtain necessary information of each individual within specific families. In November, volunteers are needed to help distribute trees to participating departments on campus. In December, volunteers (preferably with vehicles) are needed to deliver gifts to individual families.
Interested volunteers should make not of the following meeting dates to recieve more information as well as signing up to help with the program.

Distribution of trees and name tags: Nov 19th time 10pm to 3pm

Dec 4th last day to turn in gifts (rapped) at MountainServe Center 103 Raub Hall

Delivery: Dec 11th from 8 am until 11pm

Upward Bound

Upward Bound is a federally funded program that provides guidance and academic support to potential first generation college students attending Bucktail High School, Central Mountain High School, Jersey Shore High School and Williamsport High School. Upward Bound currently offers tutoring for the students of both Central Mountain and Jersey Shore High Schools Thursday afternoons from 3:30-5:00 PM.

Development Center for Adults

Development Center for Adults located in downtown Lock Haven. The Development Center for Adults offers a variety of courses for adults who are seeking continuing education, introductory courses in computer technology, and English as a second language courses. The center is open during the day and in the evenings, but different courses are offered during different times during the day. Monday/Wednesday GED trainings: 9:00– 11:30 a.m. and 6:00– 8:30 p.m. English as a Second Language courses are held: Mondays 2:00-4:30 p.m. and Wednesdays 12:30 – 2:30 p.m.

Tutors interested in this position will have to go through a required 12-hour training session, in addition to the MountainServe tutor training session.

Clinton County Independent Living

Clinton County Independent Living is a program that is offered through Children and Youth services and funded by the Chaffee grant. We service youth ages 16-21 that are aging out of foster care. Our goal is to assist them in areas including but not limited too; life skills, job readiness, educational support, and housing. Our philosophy is to enrich our youth through providing them with the tools to empower themselves. This means anything from assisting them in accepting their personal limitations and recognizing their strengths, to assisting them in following through with an apartment search and becoming aware of different community resources.

21st Century Program

The focus of this program is to provide expanded academic enrichment opportunities for children attending low performing schools. Tutorial services and academic enrichment activities are designed to help students meet local and state academic standards in subjects such as reading and math. In addition 21st CCLC programs provide youth development activities, drug and violence prevention programs, technology education programs, art, music and recreation programs, counseling and character education to enhance the academic component of the program.

This program begins October 19th, 2009.

Clearances are needed participate.

Times: Monday to Thursday: 3:30-5:30, at Robb Elementary and Central Mountain Middle School (CMMS).

3:30-4:30 is tutoring time. It mainly focuses on Math and Reading, but there is also writing, health, and several other subjects.
4:30-5:30 is activity time. Activities vary, but some examples might include cooking, photography, scrapbooking, karate, dodgeball, and other sport/craft related areas. It will depend on the school and several other factors.

There is no tutoring during scheduled holidays and days off on the KCSD calendar. In case of cancellation, please see the KCDS website (http://www.kcsd.k12.pa.us/).

John Yost Center

The Yost Center is headed by Ruth Nyman who works for the Clinton County Housing Authority. The Yost Center serves as a community center for the residents living in Lock Haven’s low-income housing area. Ruth runs an after school program for the children who live in the housing district at the Yost Center. Students range in age from 5-13, and they receive homework help and other educational programming.

Tutor Training Schedule

To set up a Tutor Training Session, please email the current (FA'09-SP'10) Tutor Coordinator, Madeline Hoff, at mhoff@lhup.edu

Possible hours available for sessions:

Mondays 8-5
Tuesdays 8:15-10, 1-4
Wednesdays 8-5
Thursdays 8:15-10:45, 11-2

Sessions can take up to an hour, so please consider that when scheduling. Also, schedules for the trainers vary from week to week, so email is the best way to set a session up.

Lock Haven Child Care

Lock Haven Child Care is a daycare center just up the street from Lock Haven University. Lock Haven Child Care works with children from toddlers to the age of 12. They offer tutoring and a variety of other programs for the young people who they serve. Lock Haven Child Care tutoring opportunities are available Monday-Thursday from 3:30-4:30.

Global Citizenship

LHUP has credit and non-credit bearing opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students to engage in service- learning. The students serving in these places and partnerships engage in these initiatives for a number of reasons, often blurring the lines between service performed for classroom learning, theses research, scholarship requirements, clinical skills building, and personal commitment. This education and the development of global citizen scholars are too important to be contained by a single classroom.

The future of our common humanity depends on how well our students learn the lessons our places, whether those places are in the Northern or Central Appalachians, the Sierra Madre Occidental, the High Atlas or the profoundly changed landscape of the Mississippi and Louisiana Gulf Coast, are teaching them. MountainServe invites you to come and join us in serving, learning and listening to the stories and lessons that come to our students from places where the ground is incredibly uneven.

Haven Holidays

Haven Holidays is a town celebration of the winter holidays that we celebrate throughout the community. Many activities are held for everyone of all ages. Parents can bring their children and watch them get their hands dirty in crafts, games and more fun! The fun isn't just for the children though. The town has displays, floats, shopping, horse pulled sleigh rides, and much more.

Kids in the Kitchen at John Yost Center

Kids in the Kitchen will be starting back up Tuesday, Septemeber 8th from 3:00 to 5:00

Kids in the Kitchen is an exciting program at the John Yost Center. Once a week, children learn about a different culture. They learn to make a meal which is commonly served in that country.

This program builds cultural awareness, enhances life skills and addresses health and safety issues.

Volunteers assist and teach the children. Kids in the Kitchen is every Tuesday from 3:00-5:00 p.m. at the JYC.

If you would like to volunteer, you MUST stop by 103 Raub Hall and fill out a volunteer sheet

C.A.P.E. is an environmental educational program put on for youth at the John Yost Center. Children gain more insight about the natural environment, while working on improving their literacy skills.

C.A.P.E is not only an educational program, but mentoring as well. Volunteers are encouraged to work one on one with the children. If you enjoy interacting with the youth through work, play and teaching, this would be a valuable experience. C.A.P.E. begins Monday September 14th and meets at the JYC every Monday from 3:30-5:00

If you want to volunteer at the JYC you MUST stop by the office at 103 Raub Hall and fill out a volunteer application, please fill out the application prior to volunteering at the event

Community Tutor Paperwork

Hello Tutors,
Please scroll down and under attachments you will find the Timesheets, Bi-Weekly Tutor Report, Monthly Tutor Form, Evaluations, and Tutor Absence Form. It is your responsibility to download, complete and electronically email the paperwork to the community tutor coordinator. Timesheets, however, must be printed off, signed and handed in to 103 Raub.

REMINDERS

Timesheet and Bi-Weekly Tutor Report are due every two weeks!

Monthly Tutor Form is due the last week of every month!

Evaluations are due at the end of the semester!

Tutor Absence Forms are due as needed!

Community Tutoring Program

The MountainServe Community Tutoring Program (MCTP) was created during the spring of 2004 to bring tutoring and mentoring services to Clinton County’s young people. As originally envisioned, the program was to serve primarily school aged youth in Lock Haven and the surrounding areas. Since that time agreements with additional community partners has lead to adult tutoring and working with toddlers and preschoolers as well.

In order to most effectively meet the needs of Clinton County, the program is designed to facilitate both tutoring and mentoring services to varying degrees. MCTP is first a tutoring program that is intended to assist young people and adults with academic learning. However, many of Clinton County’s young people are in dire need of positive role models, and we believe that mature college students with the proper training and professionalism can serve that purpose.

The sheer number of age groups served, the variety of tutoring sites as well as the dual tutor/mentor role of many tutors creates some difficulty in providing effective tutor training. We believe that in order to effectively meet the demands of tutoring such a vast range of individuals that we should strive to instill in our tutors a sense of the importance of being reliable, flexible, professional, and well prepared. We want our tutors to exude confidence and poise. We believe that tutors can only serve as positive role models and be effective aids to learning if they receive an abundance of training and understand their roles.

In order to fulfill these objectives, we require that all tutors receive an hour of training prior to entering a tutoring site. During that time, a lot of ground is covered, and it is essential that the facilitator of training be prepared, organized, and energetic enough to maintain the tutors’ attention. It is also important to make sure that all facets of the training are covered in detail so that the tutors may enter their sites confident and ready for their new positions. Best of luck!

Clinton County Cleanscapes

Students from Zacatecas, Mexico taking classes at LHU over the summer participated in a service project...check out the video below!!!

Starting in 2006, Clinton County CleanScapes of Clinton County has secured 2 grants totaling $11,000.00 to remove man-made debris in the West Branch Susquehanna River over a 2 year period. If you find a site in Lycoming or Clinton Co. - floodplain or in the river itself, please contact me so I can add it to the cleanup list.

Join CCC, Sunken Treasure Scuba Center, & Lock Haven’s Citizens Hose Fire/Water Rescue Company No. 5 for the 6th Annual West Branch Susquehanna River & Roadway cleanup event! Hikers will remove debris from Farrandsville Road while paddlers & divers will remove man-made debris from the river. Ability to know how to swim is mandatory.
August 8 Bor. of Jersey Shore, Lycoming Co.
Join CCC, Sunken Treasure Scuba Center & the Bor. of Jersey Shore as we wade in the river or paddle while removing tires & man-made debris from the West Branch Susquehanna River-ability to know how to swim is mandatory.

There are a variety of volunteer opportunities offering the flexibility of times.

Susque-View Home & Health Center is dedicated to meeting the needs of our community as a leading regional resource for comprehensive progressive healthcare. By providing excellent quality care in a vibrant, healthy environment, we seek to help our citizens live to their highest potential. Susque-View Home & Health Center will use resources in a cost-effective and community responsive manner. Working with our physicians, staff, volunteers, and other health professionals, we will continue to explore new programs and opportunities in response to the needs of our community.

Inpatient Services

Susque-View Home, Inc. has long been known for its Inpatient Services involving diagnosed medical care to the elderly however we also provide preventative rehabilitative care, long-term and short- term rehabilitative care to individuals of all ages. Residents of Susque-View are admitted on the basis of need for care provided, the environment most appropriate for the resident, and the availability of accommodations. We strive to help our residents make Susque-View Home as familiar and accommodating to them as their own homes. Residents are encouraged to personalize their rooms with the use of pictures, furnishings, TV's, memorabilia - whatever they need to make them feel content and comfortable throughout their stay.

Just a reminder. The time posted is the time the actual program starts. Volunteers should arrive 1/2 hour prior to the start time. If anyone is able to help for any of the following events, please have them contact me so we are aware.
